South Coast Track Trek | Walk South Coast Track Tasmania

South Coast Track

Challenge yourself to one of Tasmania's finest long-distance walks, carrying a full pack along the unspoiled wilderness of Australia's southernmost shores. This nine-day, 85-kilometre walk offers a spectrum of Tasmanian scenes, from empty beaches to towering rainforests and the alpine heights of the Ironbound Range. It's a place of wild scenes and wildlife, with the chance to see wombats, quolls and possibly even the orange-bellied parrot, one of the world's rarest bird species. After a spectacular flight along the coast or mountains to the remote airstrip at Melaleuca in the World Heritage-listed Southwest National Park, you will walk 10 to 15 kilometres each day, carrying up to 20 kilograms and camping at night. The walk has a flexible itinerary that allows for a rest day and time for swims or exploration along the succession of south-coast beaches. Following in the footsteps of early indigenous Australians and ancient seafarers - the South Coast Track was built as an escape route for shipwreck survivors - our knowledgeable guides will lead you through a true wilderness experience and the challenge of a lifetime. If you have have a thirst for full pack hikes, have excellent fitness and an open, flexible approach to being in remote areas for multiple days then this could be the perfect hiking adventure for you!

The South Coast Track with Tasmanian Expeditions is one of the Worlds great Treks. Wilderness, stunning scenery, great walking and exceptional guides. A must do.

I highly recommend doing the South Coast Track with Tasmanian Expeditions. The coastal and mountain scenery is great. The walk itself is so varied with plenty of challenges to break up the walking day eg mud, water crossings, beach and rock walking. The leaders- Paul, Will and Vincent, through their planning, hard work and care made the trip feel comfortable, relaxed and so much fun. Their passion for hiking and exploring the natural environment was infectious. I think the entire group would agree that the hike left its mark on us, in terms of amazing memories that we are revisiting often, new friendships, and a thirst for the next adventure.

Communication before the trip was excellent. Guides were organised and informative. Enjoyed the company of the whole group. The scenery was spectacular and every day was an adventure.

Cultures throughout history and around the world have stories of travellers lost in or stolen away to wild and magical lands, where trials are undertaken, challenges overcome and allegiances made as the adventurers strive to return home. We too were transported to the distant reaches of the South Coast of Tasmania and enchanted by the wondrous wilderness, the surging seas and the breath-taking sunsets. We battled the potent and determined mud and conquered the mighty Ironbounds and thanks to Paul and Vincent, our heroic guides, we too returned home safely; triumphant and inexplicably, somehow transformed by our experiences.

My highlight was standing under the natural water fall on Granite beach in the sun watching the waves crash on the beach as the sun went down. The trip was wonderful and all aspects were very well covered.

E. Young. Hyde Park, SA.

There were multiple highlights: the beauty of the Ironbounds; the camaraderie of the whole group; the gentle isolation from the rest of the world. These things and many other aspects made this one of the best experiences of my life.

Climbing the Ironbounds and watching the sun rise on the mountains behind us - just amazing! Paul and Vincent did a great job, and it was an incredible trip - I just wished it were longer! It was brilliant - couldn't have been better.

I would like to say a huge thankyou to the three guides who were professional and kind, patient and great fun. I would particularly like to mention Vincent (apparently in training but I think he is already more than up to the mark!) who extended an incredible degree of patience towards me (being injured and slow) - he walked with me at the back for the last 3 days - and even though he could have bounded on ahead he never said or intimated that it was annoying to have to stay with me. I was already acutely aware that I as a liability (of sorts) so having this support (extended in a kind and not at all patronising way) meant more than I can easily express (and I am not generally short of words). I was already a big fan of Tas Ex and my recent experience has confirmed this - the guides really set the tone for the walk and our group was so cohesive and friendly and I am very grateful to Paul, Will and Vincent for all they did to promote this. All three brought quite different but complimentary characteristics to the group and I want to say how appreciative and impressed I am by their leadership (nb - no bribery to say this and I really mean it - I generally decline to complete surveys but I have made an effort here as a means to passing on my appreciation!)

I recently completed the South Coast track. At almost 67 I knew it would be hard and it was. Each day involved breathtaking landscapes which often varied hourly. The challenges were many including avoiding bogs and cutting grass and descending the Iron Bound Range but at every stage the guides Ash and Ken were supportive and knowledgeable and equipped with everything needed to meet challenges e.g. my gaiters blowing out because they were Velcro which Ken repaired so well that they lasted for the rest of the trip. The camp sites were exceptional and again varied from beachside to an incredible sunset and sunrise on top of the Ironbounds! The food was exceptional and the equipment provided - tents sleeping mats etc - reminded me how far things have progressed since my last big walk about 8 years ago. To emerge at Cockle Creek at the end was exhilarating and I would encourage fit people of any age to do the walk. It is an experience that I will never forget; bookended by Ash's magnificent mushroom risotto on a rock out in the South Cape Rivulet in the afternoon sun on our last night on the track

Thanks to Ken and Paul again. They came up with a nice alternative programme when we couldn't cross Louisa River. They always kept us well informed and I just loved their little "surprises". :-)

Guides were outstanding. Capable, communicative, supportive, innovative ...

Preparing people for the challenge of the track better will make for a safer trip for everyone involved. This could be done by better explaining the conditions you will be walking in, and that the weight you will carry is likely to be over 20kgs not 17-18kgs as per the trip notes. This is important for training and preparation. Overall a great experience and a great trip. The guides and the group made it, but also a beautiful part of the world to be walking in. I would definitely recommend Tas Ex to friends, family and unknown people given your care and consideration given to us on this adventure. Thanks very much!

The Southern cape is a wilderness at the edge of Australia, a challenge and an experience well-worth preparing for.

The South Coast Trip is an extraordinary opportunity to explore the remote wilderness areas of the south west coast. The guides were outstanding; Paul was through in briefing, patient and extremely encouraging. Ken was also fantastic, very even tempered and good humoured. They provided a great perspective on the environment and context. Their talent and commitment made the trip outstanding and I would recommend the trip due to their input alone.

L. Gallagher. Randwick, NSW.

It was a pretty wet and muddy journey but apparently this was somewhat unusual. I went with Tasmanian Expeditions even though I am quite experienced. Could not begin to explain how well the trip was run. Right from the time I booked through the pre-trip briefing to the actual walk all was handled with the utmost professionalism. To walk with people who have a passion for the Tasmanian Wilderness was invaluable. I would highly recommend this walk if you like a true wilderness walk.

Kim & Steph were fantastic. Very knowledgeable, professional, good cooks and we had lots of laughs. They are an asset to your business. The South Coast Track is one of the most amazing coast lines I have seen. The trek was challenging however extremely rewarding.

It's been one week since we landed back in civilisation from our trek along the South Coast of Tassie. What an epic trip that surpassed and blew my
expectations away!

Since the first phone call I made to you quite a few months ago, through the briefing, flights and trek, everything was so professional, well planned and operated by your teams. Our guides, Kim and Stef, were amazing! to say the least. Nothing was ever too hard or too difficult. They each carried 35kg packs full of food and comforts for us to our 20kgs. They encouraged and supported all of us along the way. They were also very entertaining; I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time....we all had a blast. and they were great camp chefs! the food on our trip was absolutely amazing. I had no idea we'd be eating so well! what a highlight which also surpassed my expectations.

The day that made the trip for me was day 4, the ironbounds. I had been worried about this leg of the trip especially going up hill. I knew the downhill would be ok, but to make it to the top in good time and welcomed by pristine clear unclouded blue skies was truly a site to see.

The South Coast trek was a very personal challenge for me and i am so happy to have made the trek, but the way you and your teams have handled
everything about this trip has made this trek even more memorable.

Many thanks to you, Anne, Kim and Stef for your professionalism, great organisation and for making all the administration effortless. I can
honestly say that this is one of the top personal adventures I have ever had in my life.

I hope to be back for more in the future.

Until then, many thanks.

Overnight at Louisa Bay was outstanding. Excellent trip. Simon, Steph & Ken - fantastic guides!

T. Nugent. Elwood, Vic. Australia.

This was another well-organised, friendly and all-round fantastic trip run by TasEx.

Svenja Keele. Richmond, VIC. Australia

We departed on the South Coast track walk on 28th December, 2010. What a wonderful experience and the weather was very kind to us. Brad, our leader was a gem - organised, capable, reliable, nurturing and ready with a smile - showing us his 'coastline'. His love of the track shining through. Daniel performing all tasks with cheer showing dependability and reliance in a wilderness experience. Oscar - a man with foresight - older than his young years. All three guides enhanced our trip into the unknown.Thank you Tas Ex for our excellent guides and a most rewarding adventure.
