Join us on this epic 5-day east-to-west traverse of the Blue Mountains. This memorable journey avoids the popular tourist trails and explores routes less travelled. And at the conclusion of your full day’s walk, you’ll enjoy campsites that are remote and secluded. The experience offers a full-immersion into the real Blue Mountains.

Your days will explore a mixture of pristine environments from the Blue Mountains' twist on the classic Australian dry sclerophyll forests to the ancient Gondwana rainforests beneath towering sandstone escarpments. You’ll marvel at the efforts and frustrations that the early white explorers Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson must have experienced as they negotiated the, at times, impenetrable terrain. You’ll also come to appreciate the significance of these unique landscapes to the original inhabitants – the Gundungurra and Dhurag peoples.

The Traverse is a full-pack carry adventure with only limited support where possible by our support team. To enhance this remote walk opportunity and to allow passage through some infrequently travelled routes across the landscape, on occasion some descents will be roped to ensure your safety. A full harness with descenders will allow you to abseil under the expert guidance and support of our qualified guides.

There is no doubt this traverse of the Blue Mountains will be a memorable experience.

Itinerary

Our guides will pick you up from your local Katoomba/Leura accommodation between 6.30-7am and drive 45mins to our start location at the base of the Blue Mountains. We will begin our 5-day trek on the populated edges of the Blue Mountains National Park however it will not take us long to leave civilisation behind as we venture into the depths of this unique World Heritage listed wilderness. As if to reinforce this, our goal for the day is the aptly named Lost World. Walking Time: 6-7 hours

Meals:  L,D

After a breakfast-with-a-view we will continue deeper into the National Park. There will be a mix of fire trail, single track and off-track 'map and compass' walking today. We will explore open heath-like areas on the ridge tops and otherworldly lush green rainforest along the gullies, negotiate numerous creek crossings and marvel at the towering eucalypts before our climb to the night’s campsite. Our camp for the day includes one of the Blue Mountains best swimming holes. Walking Time: 6-7 hours

Meals:  B,L,D

Our goal for the day is a quintessential upper Blue Mountains campsite surrounded by golden sandstone escarpments. To reach this point we have a lengthy yet straightforward walk along ridgetops burnt during the January 2020 bushfires. The Australian bush is resilient and that is evident on this section. After lunch we’ve got one of the many special moments on this traverse of the Blue Mountains, as we emerge from the seemingly endless forested ridgetops to expansive views from atop of Kedumba Walls. At this point we’ll be able to see our campsite way below us. How we get to that camp is an adventure to look forward to! Walking Time: 7-8 hours

Meals:  B,L,D

We will wake to the early morning glow on the sandstone walls of the Kedumba Valley. Wombats and Kangaroos grazing, and Wedgetail Eagles circling above are common sights at this beautiful campsite that we’ll be leaving behind as we commence our slow ascent up the eastern escarpment of Mount Solitary. Once we’ve reached The Col on the eastern side of the Mount Solitary plateau, we’ll enjoy spectacular views of the walls and peaks of the southern Blue Mountains wilderness and Lake Burragorang. The traverse across the top of the Mount Solitary plateau travels close to the escarpment on the northern side so offers vast views back towards the towns of Katoomba and Leura. At the westernmost point of the plateau, we’ll begin our descent down Koorowall Knife Edge - an unformed rocky route used by walkers to access Mount Solitary from the west. With the descent conquered we are now close to our night’s camp at the base of Ruined Castle, amid the mining ruins from the late 1800’s. Once our camp is established, we have an optional side trip to climb the rock formation known as Ruined Castle for the Jamison Valley views as the light starts to fade. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Walking Time: 5-6 hours (plus side trip to Ruined Castle)

Meals:  B,L,D

The final day on our epic traverse of the Blue Mountains brings us to our end point in the Megalong Valley. How we get there is a memorable challenge. Once we depart our night's camp at Ruined Castle we’ll follow the Federal Pass along a route once travelled by mine ore carts pulled by pony's before climbing The Golden Stairs to the top of the thin finger of land known as Narrow Neck. This prominent landform divides the Jamison and Megalong Valleys with towering sandstone walls on either side. Our final descent is one to remember as we use an historic pass offering wilderness views deep into the Wild Dog Mountains and perhaps your next challenge, the Katoomba to Kanangra Walk into the wilderness of Kanangra-Boyd National Park. After a celebratory drink at our end point, we board our private mini-bus for our return to Katoomba. Walking Time: 6-7 hours

We believe our walking adventures are heaps of fun, and we want to ensure you have the best experience possible. It is important to us that you have the fitness and skills to enjoy your time with us so please read on. This trip involves trekking for up to six or seven hours a day. The terrain is at times rugged and remote. Tracks may be long, rough and steep. This trek should not be underestimated as it can be tough and challenging. You will need a good level of fitness and must be in good health. Suggested preparation: We recommend one hour of strenuous exercise 3-4 times per week (this can be cycling, jogging or walking) interspersed with relatively demanding bushwalks carrying a full pack weight (up to 20kg). At least once a week, you should walk with a weighted day pack (5–7kg) for several hours for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. The best exercise is multi day bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents and in variable weather conditions. NOTE: This tour will involve roped descents managed by qualified guides so participants should be comfortable with this exciting inclusion.
