Itinerary

We set off from Hobart this morning between 7 and 8am, arriving at Mt Field National Park before lunch. Today's walk takes in the Pandani Grove and Lake Seal from the lookout by Mount Rodway, before returning to Lake Dobson. The alpine vistas are sure to impress on a trail that is considered one of Tasmania's best day walks. We will also visit Russell Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in Tasmania. On arrival at Pumphouse Point, check-in to your room with a view and enjoy a pre-dinner glass of wine with your host in one of the lounges overlooking the lake. Hear what's in store for your time at Lake St Clair before dinner in the Shorehouse. Your host will ensure you are settled in with Tasmanian wine to accompany your three course dinner before wishing you goodnight.

Meals:  L,D

Breakfast at Pumphouse is a cosy affair with the group gathering in the Shorehouse to enjoy coffee by the fire and a highland breakfast as you watch the birds flit across the lake. After a peaceful start to your day, set off with your guide to the trailhead at Cynthia Bay. Today we enjoy a 13km circuit walk taking in the best walking in the Lake St Clair half of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park including Shadow Lake. After a local trail lunch, there is the option to visit nearby Franklin River-Wild National Park for a short walk to a viewing platform with captivating views of the Franklin River. On return to the Retreat, relax by one of the fires before meeting with your group for dinner in the Shorehouse.

Next we follow 10km of the Overland Track from Echo Point following the edge of Lake St Clair back to Cynthia Bay. Afterwards, be whisked back to the Retreat in time to enjoy a warming lunch including freshly baked hot bread straight from the oven delivered to your room to enjoy with cheese and soup from your in-room Larder. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy the trails, e-bikes and row boats offered at Pumphouse Point. At the day's end, meet new friends for a fireside drink before a final dinner at the Shorehouse.

Your final morning begins with another freshly baked and locally sourced breakfast followed by time for an optional walk around the Pumphouse grounds to stretch out any sore legs before the journey back to Hobart. The walks we undertake at Lake St Clair and Mount Field are bush trails, not sealed pathways. Some sections are involve uneven terrain and short steep inclines/declines. Sure footedness is required in places where there are tree routes and uneven ground, particularly after wet weather. We recommend preparing for your experience with some general fitness/hiking training and packing for the conditions with mid-ankle hiking boots and wet weather protection for your comfort. Our team will provide further tips upon booking. If you enjoy walking and are of good health and fitness you should enjoy the Lake St Clair Walk with a bit of preparation, provided you’re steady on your feet. The best way to prepare physically for the trip is to walk, walk and walk some more – preferably over a variety of terrain. You should walk frequently with a day pack in the lead up to your trip. And start walking in the boots you will wear on the walk now! We suggest you incorporate walks that include some steep inclines and declines into your preparation, gradually building up to approximately 12-14km in the lead up to your walk. Experience walking over uneven terrain (not just footpaths) is also very important – trip hazards, including tree roots, are common on Tasmanian walk tracks. If you tackle a moderately challenging 14km bushwalk this should take you about 5-6 hours at a relaxed pace factoring in breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend arriving the day prior to ensure you are ready to meet your group between 7am and 8am on the morning of your walk commencing.

Mobile phone coverage with Telstra (and sometimes Optus) is available, but there is no WiFi.

There are plenty of things to do at Lake St Clair, with bushwalking and spending time on the water topping the list for most. You can take in Lake St Clair from the shoreline by e-bike or mountain bike, riding alongside the water on the firm beach trails, or you may prefer to drift around in a rowboat to admire the surrounding wilderness. Complimentary boats and e-bikes are included with your stay and are a perfect way to get a new perspective of the lake on your free afternoon on day 3 of the Lake St Clair Walk.

Another must-do experience at Lake St Clair included in the 4 day experience with Walk into Luxury is a boat ride to Echo Point or Narcissus Hut which takes you most of the length of the Lake offering special views to the mountains beyond.

Our final tip for what to do at Lake St Clair is to simply relax at Pumphouse Point; why not indulge in a massage treatment post-hike while you're at it (pre-booking essential).
