Our Responsible Travel Policy

Committed to true sustainable travel

Australian Walking Holidays is committed to responsible travel and true sustainability. It was a commitment formed when the company was established, and today, in the face of a multitude of threats to the environment, our commitment is stronger than ever. We aim to ensure that our destinations retain their natural character and cultural diversity for future generations. This vision can only be achieved with the support of all of our travellers and business partners.

Here are some of the ways our Responsible Travel policies are leading the way in the industry:

Leave No Trace

We support the policies Leave No Trace Australia to ensure destinations retain their natural character and cultural diversity. Our parent company, World Expeditions, is one of the key industry partners and the Leave No Trace principles are embedded into our philosophy. Find more about our commitment to leaving no trace here.

Cultural Preservation

We continually seek ways to enhance cultural experiences and work with Indigenous leaders on many of our trips. The experiences our Indigenous leaders bring to our trips, such as cultural conversations, indigenous meal samplings, and welcome to countries, allow clients to gain a deeper understanding of the need to conserve the Aboriginal cultures and respect their place and lifestyle in Australia.

"Three Indigenous women, Raeleen Brown, Kathleen Buzzacott and Rhonda, in their different areas of interest and expertise, brought us a deeper understanding of their cultural connection to their land. All extremely passionate in their fields, we all learned a lot from each of them." - Working with local communities

Working with local communities

Australian Walking Holidays aims to maximise the positive benefits of tourism for host communities. This includes:

  • Training and employment of local staff, using local suppliers and assisting in the development of sustainable local businesses. This actively minimises the negative effects that tourism can have by ensuring that tourism does not divert resources away from local communities or drive up prices on local resources.
  • Providing opportunities for cultural exchange, where locals and visitors alike can share and learn from each other in an environment of mutual respect. We contribute to the welfare of the host community. This is epitomised in our Community Project Travel program where we organise for our travellers to spend time in disadvantaged villages upgrading basic facilities such as health, education and water access.
  • Educate our travellers about the destination and its local cultures as well as providing guidelines on appropriate behaviour to minimise impact.

Environmental Sustainability

True sustainability in all aspects of our business planning and operations. Specifically our tours are managed in a way where the natural and cultural values of the host region are undiminished in the long-term, such as that with our Larapinta Trail eco-campsites. Where possible, we engage in partnerships with local environmental groups and/or land managers to actively campaign for conservation or promote environmental protection and/or rehabilitation.
