The Larapinta Trail is one of the most spectacular desert walks in the world - but how hard is it, really?

It’s a fair question. On paper, it’s a remote outback trail running 223km through rugged, rocky ranges. The sun can bite, the ground is uneven, and the days can be long. But that’s just part of the picture.

We’ve been guiding walks on the Larapinta since 1995. In fact, we pioneered commercial trekking on this trail, and we’ve played a big role in shaping the experience into what it is today. With our expert support, well-paced itineraries and award-winning camp comforts, the Larapinta is more achievable than many people think.

You don’t need to carry a heavy pack or navigate the logistics on your own. Our guided trips are fully supported - you walk with a light daypack while we handle the food, safety, gear and transfers. And if you are an experienced trekker looking for a more independent option, we also offer self-guided itineraries backed by the same level of behind-the-scenes support.

What Makes the Larapinta Trail Challenging?

Terrain and conditions

The Larapinta Trail traverses the West MacDonnell Ranges, stretching from Alice Springs to the summit of Mount Sonder. It’s a mix of hard-packed trail, rocky ridgelines, dry riverbeds and steep ascents. You’ll need to be steady on your feet, and comfortable walking 12–20km a day.

Weather

From April to September (the official trekking season), you can expect warm days and cool nights - sometimes freezing in June and July. The shoulder months can see daytime temps reach the 30s, but mostly it’s in the low 20s with crisp, clear skies.
