Blog home / Jatbula Trail vs Kakadu: Which Top End Adventure Is Right for You?
The Northern Territory's Top End is home to two of Australia's most remarkable guided walking experiences: the Jatbula Trail and Kakadu National Park. Both offer ancient indigenous culture, breathtaking landscapes and expert-guided adventures. But they suit very different walkers.
This guide will help you choose the trip that best matches your fitness level, travel style and what you're hoping to take away from the Top End.
The Jatbula Trail: A Wilderness Trek for Experienced Walkers
The Jatbula Trail is a five-day, full-pack wilderness walk stretching 58 kilometres from Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls through the heart of Nitmiluk National Park. It follows an ancient Jawoyn songline past sacred rock art sites, through monsoon forest and alongside a chain of crystal-clear swimming holes - one at the end of every single day.
With just 15 permits issued per day across all operators, this is one of Australia's most protected and uncrowded walks. Groups are small, the campsites are yours alone, and the silence is something you'll remember long after you're home.
What to expect
- Five days of full-pack hiking, 8–16 km per day
- Pack weight approximately 15–17 kg including your share of group food
- Wilderness camping at creekside campsites with natural swimming holes
- Guides manage meals, navigation and group logistics
- Gorge cruise through Nitmiluk on arrival
- All transfers, meals, camping equipment, park and traditional owner fees included
- Season: June to August
The Jatbula Trail is ideal for
- Walkers with solid fitness and prior multi-day hiking experience
- Those ready for their first serious full-pack adventure
- People seeking genuine wilderness solitude
- Hikers who want cultural depth alongside a physical challenge
- Anyone who's had it on their list and keeps missing out on permits
Kakadu National Park: An Iconic Adventure for All Levels
Kakadu is Australia's largest national park - half the size of Switzerland - and one of the most biodiverse and culturally significant places on the planet. A UNESCO World Heritage listed site for both its nature and culture, it offers ancient rock art, spectacular waterfalls, extraordinary wildlife and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country.
Australian Walking Holidays offers two Kakadu itineraries depending on your fitness and experience, both run as six-day day pack adventures staying at exclusive semi-permanent campsites within the park.
Kakadu Explorer - Introductory to Moderate
The Explorer is designed for walkers who want an immersive Top End experience without the demands of a full-pack trek. You carry only a day pack, your guides handle everything else, and the itinerary takes in yellow water billabong cruises, ancient rock art at Nourlangie, cultural immersion with the Bininj and Mungguy people at Pudakul, and some of Kakadu's most spectacular waterfalls including Mardugal.
This itinerary also runs as a family departure, with child pricing available for children aged 8–15, limited to school holidays. It's one of the few genuinely immersive wilderness experiences accessible to families in Australia.
Kakadu Challenger - Moderate to Challenging
The Challenger follows a similar framework but adds longer, more demanding walks including a 300-metre escarpment climb to the top of Jim Jim Falls and a full walk to Twin Falls - areas simply not reachable on the Explorer itinerary. It runs in July and August only, when conditions are best suited to the bigger days.
What to expect on both Kakadu itineraries
- Six days, day pack only - no heavy carrying required
- Exclusive semi-permanent campsites within the national park
- Safari-style tents with stretcher beds and thick mattresses
- All meals prepared by your guides including three-course dinners
- Yellow water billabong sunset cruise
- Cultural immersion with traditional owners at Pudakul
- Return transfers from Darwin in air-conditioned vehicles
- All national park and traditional owner fees included
- Season: June to September (Explorer) / July to August (Challenger)
Kakadu is ideal for
- Walkers at any fitness level, from beginners to experienced hikers
- Families with children aged 8–15 (Explorer family departures)
- Travellers who want maximum comfort alongside the wilderness experience
- Those who want to cover significant ground without carrying a heavy pack
- Anyone drawn to wildlife, birdlife and big-sky landscapes
- Walkers seeking a strong cultural experience with traditional owners

Still unsure? Use this simple rule of thumb:
👉 If you want a physical challenge, wilderness solitude and daily swimming holes on a classic point-to-point trek, choose the Jatbula Trail.
👉 If you want a fully supported, day pack adventure suitable for all fitness levels, including families, choose Kakadu.
👉 If you want both, the Top End has room for it. The Jatbula Trail and a Kakadu tour pair naturally, and our team can help you combine them with a Katherine River canoeing adventure for a complete Top End expedition.
Both experiences are guided by Australian Walking Holidays, part of the World Expeditions Travel Group. View all Top End departures and enquire about availability.
