What is the Larapinta Trail?

The Larapinta Trail runs 223 kilometres along the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia. It’s one of the nation’s most celebrated long-distance walks and officially recognised as a Great Walk of Australia. The trail showcases ancient geology, dramatic desert landscapes, cool waterholes and the living culture of the Arrernte people.

We offer a range of ways to experience it: from our Eco-Comfort Camp based walks that focus on the trail’s highlights, to the full end-to-end traverse supported by camping. Whether you want a shorter taste or the complete journey, we have the experience and infrastructure to make it possible.

When did guided walks on the Larapinta begin?

We pioneered guided walking on the Larapinta Trail more than 30 years ago. We were the first to operate commercial treks here and have led more travellers along the trail than anyone else. Our long-standing presence means unmatched local knowledge, highly trained guides, and safe, supported walking trips.

How do your walking tours work?

You’ll walk around 4–6 hours a day, carrying only a light daypack. Our expert guides lead the way, share stories about the land, and take care of all the daily chores – from cooking to camp set-up – so you can relax.

Each afternoon you’ll arrive at our Eco-Comfort Camps where hot showers, hearty meals and time around the campfire await. Evenings are unhurried – a chance to share stories with fellow walkers, watch the sun set over the ranges, and enjoy the peace of the outback night.

What can I win in this competition?

A place for you and three mates on our 6-day Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort (trip code LAR), plus a flight credit in AUD. It’s our signature Larapinta experience.

How does the flight credit work?

We’ll provide AUD $500 per person towards your flights to Alice Springs. The credit will be applied when you confirm your booking, and our reservations consultant will work out the details with you directly.

What if I want a tougher walk?

The prize cannot be exchanged – it is fixed for the Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort. If you’d like something more challenging, scroll down to see our Remote Larapinta treks. These journeys head deeper into the ranges with longer walking days and a higher grading for seasoned trekkers.

How old do I need to be?

You must be 18 years or older to enter and to join the prize trip. There’s no upper age limit if you meet the health and fitness requirements.

When does the competition end?

Entries close at 11:59pm AEDT on Friday 10 October 2025.

How many places are in the prize?

Four in total – you and three friends will join an existing guaranteed departure.

Will the prize trip be a private departure?

No – the prize trip is not an exclusive departure. The winner will join an existing scheduled trip that is already guaranteed to operate, as outlined in the Terms and Conditions. This ensures you’ll share the experience with other trekkers on a confirmed departure.

Do I need to stay subscribed to emails?

By entering, you agree to receive our emails. You may unsubscribe at any time, but please remain subscribed until after the winner is announced as all notifications are sent by email. If the prize is not claimed in 7 days after being announced by email it wll be re-drawn.

How fit do I need to be?

The Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort is graded Introductory to Moderate (Grade 4). Expect 6–7 hours of walking a day on rocky desert trails, carrying just a light daypack. A reasonable base level of fitness is required, and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the journey.

Competition Terms & Conditions

1. Competition Period
Entries close at 11:59pm AEDT on Friday 10 October 2025. No entries will be accepted after this time.
2. Eligibility
  • Entry is open to individuals aged 18 years and over.
  • Entrants can be residents of Australia or overseas.
  • Only one entry per person is permitted.
  • Employees of World Expeditions Travel Group and their immediate families are ineligible to enter.
3. Entry Mechanism
To enter, participants must answer the following question: 
“In 25 words or less, tell us why you want to experience the Larapinta Trail with your mates in 2026.”
  • Entries must be original and created by the entrant.
  • Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity, and relevance to the prompt.
  • This is a game of skill. Chance plays no part in determining the winner.
4. Judging and Winner Selection
  • A panel of judges appointed by World Expeditions will review all eligible entries.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The winner will be selected within 7 days of the competition closing and notified via email.
  • If the winner does not respond within 14 days, a runner-up will be selected.
  • The winner must be currently subscribed to the Australian Walking Holiday enewsletter
5. Prize Details
  • The prize is a place on the Classic Larapinta Trek in Comfort (trip code LAR), operated by Australian Walking Holidays, for the winner and three of your chosen guests, a total of four places.
  • The trip must be undertaken in 2026, on available guaranteed scheduled departures.
  • A $500pp flight credit in AUD will be provided. Exact value and redemption process will be confirmed with the winner directly.
  • The prize does not include any items listed in the Trip Notes under the “What’s Not Included” section, including:
    • Accommodation before/after the trip
    • Travel insurance
    • Equipment hire
    • Personal expenses
    • Any other optional extras
  • All travel is subject to availability and must be booked through Australian Walking Holidays
  • Prize is not transferable, not refundable, and cannot be exchanged for cash.
6. Trip Conditions
  • The winner must agree to World Expeditions' full Booking Terms and Conditions at the time of confirming their place.
  • The winner must meet the fitness and health requirements of the trip, in line with the official trip grading.
  • A completed medical form may be required and is subject to approval under World Expeditions’ safe selection guidelines.
  • You can only choose to join a trip that is already guranteed to operate at minimum numbers.
7. Privacy
  • By entering, participants agree to receive marketing communications from Australian Walking Holidays. You may unsubscribe at any time.
