Wilpena Pound Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre of mountains located in the heart of the Flinders Ranges National Park. This marvelously grand area covers eight times the area of Uluru and looks as though it was forged from a meteor millions of years ago, however in fact the Pound is sedimentary rock in the form of a large syncline, a painfully slow layering of sediments, which started around 800 million years ago. This folding of layers cajoled them up into a mountain range that once towered as high as the Himalayas, however over a long time and erosion, the range now sits just over 1170m.
St Marys Peak St Marys peak is the highest mountain in the Flinders Ranges, at 1189m. The rewarding panoramic views of the Flinders Ranges, Aroona Valley, and the salt plains to the west can be seen after a breathtaking day hike.
Brachina Gorge Brachina Gorge is one of the Flinders Ranges National Park's most popular and spectacular attractions. Travel through the geological time trail as you view fossils and imprints of stromatolites, some of the earliest forms of life ever to appear on earth. Brachina Gorge is a window into 650 million years of the earth's history, and an important refuge for the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby as well as many species of birds and reptiles.
Dutchmans Stern This prominent land bluff known as the Dutchmans Stern is home to a host of plants and animals. It is another of Quorns breathtaking formations, and the walk to the bluff winds through sugar gum woodlands and into Sheoak forest before reaching the Stern, which offers stunning views out to Spencer Gulf.
