Why Climbing Mt Sonder at Sunrise Is the Ultimate Larapinta Finale

Rwetyepme / Mt Sonder is the highest point on the Larapinta Trail - and for many of our walkers, the most unforgettable. But it’s not just the height that makes it special. It’s how you get there.

If you have the opportunity to complete your walk along Australia's most iconic desert trail with a dawn ascent of Mt Sonder, do it.

It is the only way to finish the Larapinta Trail if you want to experience it's full magic.

Climbing Mt Sonder is a walking adventure most reasonably fit people should be able to achieve. There are no sections for vertigo sufferers to worry about, but it is dark. Walking by headtorch under the Milky Way, it’s silent, and thankfully, cool.

And thanks to our nearby Sonder and Fearless Eco-Comfort Camps, there is no long vehicle transfer to dampen the anticipation over the past 5 days of finishing in such style.

At the summit, your guide pours you a cup of tea. You wrap your hands around the mug, breathe in the stillness, and watch the sun rise over the Red Centre, more specifically, the terrain you walked through, over and around - ridge by ridge, gorge by gorge.

It’s a sunrise earned.

Climbing Mt Sonder at dawn is always one of the top trip highlights. Here's why our travellers wouldn't climb Mt Sonder any other way.

1. It’s cooler - and more comfortable

Climbing Mt Sonder in the dark means you avoid the potential intense desert heat that builds quickly after sunrise. If you are coming from a winter climate - or just not used to being out in the sun all day long - even milder days can feel warmer

“The early morning start was so worth it. Cool air, quiet trail, and the most stunning views from the summit of Mt Sonder.”

2. It feels like a real adventure - but it’s achievable for everyone

Walking by headtorch in the stillness of early morning is something special - calm, peaceful, and deeply rewarding. There’s no rush, no scramble. Just a steady climb with your guide, one step at a time, along an easy to follow trail with no tricky bits. You can do it.

“I didn’t think I’d make it to the summit, but the guides made it achievable – standing at the top watching the sun come up was surreal.”

3. You see the whole trail behind you

By the time you reach the summit, you’ve already walked more than 65km. When the sun rises, it lights up the very ground you’ve walked. That’s a moment no one forgets.

“Climbing Mt Sonder at sunrise was the absolute highlight. Watching the light spill over the trail we’d just walked was unforgettable.”

4. Our Eco-Comfort Camp is at the base of Mt Sonder

Our Sonder Eco-Comfort Camp is the closest private camp to the summit trailhead. No early transfers, no 4WD start. Just a steady walk into the dawn.

“Our guides were amazing and that sunrise climb on the last day was just perfect. Such a special way to end the walk.”

5. It’s not just a summit - it’s a finish line

Whether you get to the top of Mt Sonder or not, it's a milestone moment. Standing at the base of Rwetyepme / Mt Sonder, the end of the walk, is also the start of new, lifelong friendships..

“The final climb up Mt Sonder was magical - still, silent, and then boom, the sun hits the ranges. A memory that will stay with me forever.”

If you only get one shot at walking the Larapinta Trail, make sure it includes a dawn ascent of Rwetyepme / Mt Sonder
